Other Cokayne or Cockayne Stemma
In researching the genealogical sources for the Cokayne family we have been able to build some off-shoots that we cannot yet fit into the broader family tree. In the hope that other researchers may be able to help us understand more about these branches we publish them here as JPEG files, along with some brief notes. Please contact us if you can add to these branches.
Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire
John Cockayne and Mary Smith, c. 1760: the Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire, branch (497KB). Villages of interest include Shottle, Turnditch and Idridgehay in Derbyshire, and the towns of Bootle in Lancashire and Burton-upon-Trent in Staffordshire. It is possible that the John from whom this branch originates could have originated from Alderwasley, Derbyshire, the son of George Cockayne and Mary Smith, c. 1735, and grandson of Robert Cockayne, c. 1710.
Parish records: there are no records of Cockayne baptisms or burials in the Kirk Ireton register for the period 1799-1814, or of marriages in the registers for 1754-1812 or 1813-1837. Whilst it is possible that there were records prior to 1799, the earliest Kirk Ireton baptism seems to be 1834. This supports the possibility that John Cockayne did not originate from Kirk Ireton.
